Oppa Gungnam Style

Gangnam Style  is a 2012 K-pop single by the South Korean rapper Psy. It has been featured in broadcasting networks such as CNN and Bloomberg, mentioned by numerous celebrities, and has also led to various user-generated parodies and reaction videos from all over the world. According to the German national daily newspaper Die Welt, "Gangnam Style" is spreading like a "Lauffeuer" (wildfire),and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation writes that millions around the globe have become "obsessed". "Gangnam Style" is widely praised for its humour, catchy rhythm as well as Psy's unusual dance moves that have introduced many people to K-pop. First released on July 15, 2012, it entered the Gaon Chart singles chart at number one upon release, and it has the most views as a K-Pop song on YouTube.

BACKGROUND

"Gangnam Style" is a Korean language colloquialism that refers to a luxurious lifestyle associated with the Gangnam district, an affluent and trendy area of Seoul. The music video depicts Psy dancing at various locations in Gangnam. The song is about "the perfect girlfriend who knows when to be refined and when to get wild."
In colloquial Korean, "오빤 강남 스타일 (Oppan Gangnam style)" may be translated as "I love the Gangnam style" or literally "Your big brother is Gangnam Style". The Korean word 오빠 (oppa) means "a female's elder brother" but can be also used as a first-, second- or third-person masculine pronoun to designate a male who is elder or older than a female. Based on more recent cultural norms, the term has typically been used to refer to a boyfriend or male spouse. It is used as a first-person pronoun in this phrase. 오빤 (oppan) is an abbreviation of 오빠는 (oppaneun). 는 is a topic marker, which in this case means the implied subject of the sentence is the singer (오빠). The verb "to be" is omitted, as is often the case in such short Korean sentences. Thus the literal translation of "Oppan Gangnam style" is "Your big brother [is] Gangnam Style".
The lyrics are by Psy, music by Psy and Yoo Gun-hyung, and it was arranged by Yoo Gun-hyung, who is a well-known producer in South Korea and also collaborated with Psy in the past.

MUSIC VIDEO

The music video shows PSY dancing a comical horse-riding dance and appearing in unexpected locations such as an outdoor yoga session and hot tub. The "skewering [of] the Gangnam image" by the "non-Gangnam PSY" is recognizable to Korean viewers, but those less familiar with the cultural context have found the video "fresh" amidst the teen pop idol groups increasingly popular with overseas viewers.

Making appearances in the music video are:
  • 4minute member Hyuna playing PSY's love interest and appearing in the two final dance sequences
  • Comedian/television personality Yoo Jae-Seok in a dance duel with PSY
  • Comedian/television personality Noh Hong-cheol dancing in an elevator with his trademark pelvic-   thrusting
  • Hwang Min-woo, a 5 year old boy who is seen dancing at the beginning of the video. During an interview with CNN, Psy stated that "the night before the music video shoot, I was watching Korea's Got Talent and saw him dance to Michael Jackson. His moves were ridiculous. So we called him up and asked him to be in the music video, which was shooting the very next day, and he came and it all worked out."
About a month after its initial release, on August 17, 2012, Gangnam Style officially won first-place in the Korean music television programme Music Bank on KBS 2TV, scoring a total of 18,601 points.

VIDEO PERFORMENCE ON YOUTUBE

Another indicator of the song's immense growing popularity is its performance on the video sharing platform YouTube. The Los Angeles Times calls it one of the greatest videos ever to be uploaded to YouTube.
Uploaded on July 15, 2012, "Gangnam Style" has been viewed over 89 million times and overtook Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe to reach the number one position on the YouTube Top 100 Music Videos during the week of August 28, 2012.On the 1st of September, it overtook Girl's Generation's Gee to become the most viewed K-Pop video on Youtube. About 47% of the views came from the United States, 7% from the United Kingdom, 6.8% from Canada and 4% from South Korea.

INFLUENCE ON OTHER CELEBRITIES

One important factor that has led to "Gangnam Style" being so well known is its popularity among many notable celebrities, this has caused it to receive attention from numerous fans in and outside the United States. When "Gangnam Style" was first released, it was only known to fans of K-Pop, and in particular those of Psy's record label the South Korean management agency YG Entertainment. However, K-Pop fans started to share it on social networks like Facebook and Twitter and it was not long before internet users outside the K-Pop community began to notice it. Soon, even celebrities in and outside the United States started mentioning about "Gangnam Style" on Twitter and elsewhere, which led to a snowball effect further increasing Gangnam Style's already growing popularity.
For example, on August 16, 2012, Nelly Furtado performed the song in her concert in the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
During the late night comedy talk show Chelsea Lately, the American stand-up comedian and actress Chelsea Handler tells the audience that she is assembling a task force to expand the search for the lucky man to marry. She excludes the Russians and the natives of Galápagos from her search, and calls Psy a "surprising person that has pricked my interest", as well as a "revolutionary musician, dancer and sex symbol". She also compares Psy with the latino pop singer Ricky Martin, before revealing that she had discovered "Gangnam Style" "only after 43 million people have watched this video on Youtube." Shortly after, she exclaims "Oppa Gangnam Style!" and the programme ends with the "Gangnam Style" dance performed by 6 backstage dancers.
Other notable artists such as the British singer Robbie Williams, actor Simon Pegg as well as Josh Groban have also mentioned about the music video on Twitter. While Rapper T-Pain praised “Gangnam Style” because "Words cannot even describe how amazing this video is."[40], Britney Spears indicated her interest in "Gangnam Style"'s choreography. She tweeted "I am LOVING this video – so fun! Thinking that I should possibly learn the choreography. Anybody wanna teach me?”
After the release of "Gangnam Style", the American talent manager Scooter Braun, who discovered Justin Bieber on Youtube, asked on Twitter "How did I not sign this guy (Psy)". Soon afterwards, it was reported that Psy had left for Los Angeles to meet with representatives of Justin Bieber, to explore collaboration opportunities.[45][4] During The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the American stand-up comedian Jay Leno danced to "Gangnam Style" during a parody of US presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

ANIME

Anime is a style of animation originating in Japan, characterized by colorful graphics and often featuring themes intended for an adult audience. The word is the Japanese abbreviated pronunciation of "animation." The intended meaning of the term sometimes varies depending on the context.
While the earliest known Japanese animation dates to 1917, and many original Japanese animations were produced in the ensuing decades, the characteristic anime style developed in the 1960s notably with the work of Osamu Tezuka and became known outside Japan in the 1980s.
Anime, like manga, has a large audience in Japan and recognition throughout the world. Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online.
Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist. It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction. As the market for anime increased in Japan, it also gained popularity in East and Southeast Asia. Anime is currently popular in many different regions around the world.

Osamu Tezuka

Osamu Tezuka (born November 3, 1928 – February 9, 1989) was a Japanese cartoonist, manga artist, animator, producer, activist and medical doctor who never practiced medicine. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he is best known as the creator of Astro Boy, Kimba the White Lion and Black Jack. He is often credited as the "Godfather of Anime", and is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during his formative years. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga", "the god of comics" and "kamisama of manga"

HISTORY OF ANIME

Anime began at the start of the 20th century, when Japanese filmmakers experimented with the animationtechniques also pioneered in France, Germany, the United States, and Russia. The oldest known anime in existence first screened in 1917 – a two-minute clip of a samurai trying to test a new sword on his target, only to suffer defeat. Early pioneers included Shimokawa Oten, Jun'ichi Kouchi, and Seitarō Kitayama.

By the 1930s animation became an alternative format of storytelling to the live-action industry in Japan. But it suffered competition from foreign producers and many animators, such as Noburō Ōfuji and Yasuji Murata still worked in cheaper cutout not cel animation, although with masterful results.Other creators, such as Kenzō Masaoka and Mitsuyo Seo, nonetheless made great strides in animation technique, especially with increasing help from a government using animation in education and propaganda. The first talkie anime was Chikara to Onna no Yo no Naka, produced by Masaoka in 1933.The first feature length animated film wasMomotaro's Divine Sea Warriors directed by Seo in 1945 with sponsorship by the Imperial Japanese Navy.

The success of The Walt Disney Company's 1937 feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs influenced Japanese animators. In the 1960s, manga artist and animator Osamu Tezuka adapted and simplified many Disney animation-techniques to reduce costs and to limit the number of frames in productions. He intended this as a temporary measure to allow him to produce material on a tight schedule with inexperienced animation-staff.

The 1970s saw a surge of growth in the popularity of manga – many of them later animated. The work of Osamu Tezuka drew particular attention: he has been called a "legend" and the "god of manga".His work – and that of other pioneers in the field – inspired characteristics and genres that remain fundamental elements of anime today. The giant robot genre (known as "Mecha" outside Japan), for instance, took shape under Tezuka, developed into the Super Robot genre under Go Nagai and others, and was revolutionized at the end of the decade by Yoshiyuki Tomino who developed the Real Robot genre. Robot anime like the Gundam and The Super Dimension Fortress Macross series became instant classics in the 1980s, and the robot genre of anime is still one of the most common in Japan and worldwide today. In the 1980s, anime became more accepted in the mainstream in Japan (although less than manga), and experienced a boom in production. Following a few successful adaptations of anime in overseas markets in the 1980s, anime gained increased acceptance in those markets in the 1990s and even more at the turn of the 21st century.

EYE STYLES

Many anime and manga characters feature large eyes. Osamu Tezuka, who is believed to have been the first to use this technique, was inspired by the exaggerated features of American cartoon characters such as Betty Boop, Mickey Mouse, and Disney's Bambi. Tezuka found that large eyes style allowed his characters to show emotions distinctly. When Tezuka began drawing Ribbon no Kishi, the first manga specifically targeted at young girls, Tezuka further exaggerated the size of the characters' eyes. Indeed, through Ribbon no Kishi, Tezuka set a stylistic template that later shōjo artists tended to follow.

Coloring is added to give eyes, particularly to the cornea, some depth. The depth is accomplished by applying variable color shading. Generally, a mixture of a light shade, the tone color, and a dark shade is used.Cultural anthropologist Matt Thorn argues that Japanese animators and audiences do not perceive such stylized eyes as inherently more or less foreign.

However, not all anime have large eyes. For example, some of the work of Hayao Miyazaki and Toshiro Kawamoto are known for having realistically proportioned eyes, as well as realistic hair colors on their characters.

INFLUENCE ON WORLD CULTURE
Anime has become commercially profitable in Western countries, as early commercially successful western adaptations of anime, such as Astro Boy, have revealed. The phenomenal success of Nintendo's multi-billion dollar Pokémon franchise was helped greatly by the spin-off anime series that, first broadcast in the late 1990s, is still running worldwide to this day. In doing so, anime has made significant impacts upon Western culture. Since the 19th century, many Westerners have expressed a particular interest towards Japan. Anime dramatically exposed more Westerners to the culture of Japan. Aside from anime, other facets of Japanese culture increased in popularity.Worldwide, the number of people studying Japanese increased. In 1984, the Japanese Language Proficiency Test was devised to meet increasing demand.

Even domestic animation industries had made attempts at emulating anime. Anime-influenced animation refers to non-Japanese works of animation that emulate the visual style of anime. Most of these works are created by studios in the United States, Europe, and non-Japanese Asia; and they generally incorporate stylizations, methods, and gags described in anime physics, as in the case of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Often, production crews either are fans of anime or are required to view anime. Some creators cite anime as a source of inspiration with their own series.Furthermore, a French production team for Ōban Star-Racers moved to Tokyo to collaborate with a Japanese production team from Hal Film Maker.Critics and the general anime fanbase do not consider them as anime.
Some American animated television-series have singled out anime styling with satirical intent, for example South Park (with "Chinpokomon" and with "Good Times with Weapons"). South Park has a notable drawing style, itself parodied in "Brittle Bullet", the fifth episode of the anime FLCL, released several months after "Chinpokomon" aired. This intent on satirizing anime is the springboard for the basic premise of Kappa Mikey, a Nicktoons Network original cartoon. Even clichés normally found in anime are parodied in some series, such as Perfect Hair Forever.
Anime conventions began to appear in the early 1990s, during the Anime boom, starting with Project A-Kon, Anime Expo, Animethon, and Otakon. Currently anime conventions are held annually in various cities across the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Many attendees participate in cosplay, where they dress up as anime characters. Also, guests from Japan ranging from artists, directors, and music groups are invited. In addition to anime conventions, anime clubs have become prevalent in colleges, high schools, and community centers as a way to publicly exhibit anime as well as broadening Japanese cultural understanding.
Viewers may also pick up on Japanese terms either within or related to anime, though at times those words may take on different connotations. For instance, the Japanese term otaku is used as a term for anime fans beyond Japan, more particularly the obsessive ones. The negative connotations associated with the word in Japan have lessened in foreign context, where it instead connotes the pride of the fans.
